Personal Finance › Learn › Zakat on Gold and Jewelry vs Cash Savings (2027)
Personal Finance · Zakat
Gold and cash are both charged at 2.5%, but they are counted, valued and argued over in different ways. Here is each one, step by step.
Sundas Tahir, Founder & CEO, FinWiser.
If you own a few gold bangles and a savings account, you already hold the two assets people most often get stuck on when working out how to calculate zakat. Both are charged at the same 2.5%. What differs is everything before the percentage: what counts, how you value it, and which threshold you test it against.
This guide sets gold and jewelry beside cash savings and walks through each step for the 2027 zakat season, with Ramadan expected to begin around 8 February 2027. Neither asset is the “correct” one to hold, and nothing here ranks them. The aim is a figure you can explain line by line.
One note before the math. Zakat is an act of worship, and the schools of Islamic law differ on some details below. Treat this as a calculation guide and take questions of ruling to a scholar you trust.
Our Wisers Say
Price your gold by its pure weight, never by the receipt. A 22-karat bangle is 91.7% gold, and you owe nothing on the stones, the making charge or the shop’s markup.
If you are torn between two scholarly positions on worn jewelry, run the number both ways before you decide. The gap is often smaller than the worry it causes.
Good News: You Don’t Have to Choose
Gold and cash are not two separate zakat bills. Most zakat bodies have you convert everything to one currency, add it up, and test the single total against the threshold.
Say you hold 40 grams of 22-karat jewelry and $3,000 in savings. The jewelry contains 36.67 grams of pure gold, worth about $4,900 at early-October 2026 prices. Add the cash and your pot is $7,900, so the zakat due is $197.50.
Notice what happened there. The gold alone sits far below the 87.48-gram gold threshold, yet the combined pot clears the silver-based threshold comfortably. That is why the first step in how to calculate zakat is always a full list, not a single asset.

How to Calculate Zakat, Criterion by Criterion
What Counts
For cash, nearly everything counts. That means current and savings accounts, cash at home, and money you have lent that you expect to get back. Savings set aside for a wedding, Hajj or a car are still savings.
For gold, bars and coins always count. Jewelry is where the schools divide. The Hanafi school treats all gold and silver as zakatable, worn or not. The Maliki, Shafi’i and Hanbali schools exempt jewelry that is actually worn.
Pieces bought as a store of value and left in a locker are generally treated as savings by all four. Diamonds, gemstones and platinum kept for personal use are outside zakat.
The Threshold (Nisab)
The nisab is the minimum wealth you must hold before zakat applies. It is fixed by weight at 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver, though some scholars round to 85 and 595 grams.
The dollar value moves daily. On 5 October 2026, gold traded at $4,156.30 per troy ounce (31.1 grams), which puts the gold nisab near $11,690. Silver at $61.80 puts the silver nisab near $1,217.
The nisab is a gate, not a tax-free allowance. This is the step in how to calculate zakat that people most often get wrong. Once your total passes the line, you pay 2.5% on the whole amount, not only on the part above it.
Valuation: Weight and Karat vs Account Balance
Cash values itself. Open your banking apps on your zakat date, write down each balance, and convert any foreign currency at that day’s rate.
Gold needs three numbers: weight in grams, purity, and the price per gram of pure gold on the day. Purity is the karat figure divided by 24, so 22K is 91.7% gold and 18K is 75%.
Take a 50-gram 22K necklace. It holds 45.83 grams of pure gold, worth about $6,125 at $133.63 a gram, so the zakat on it is $153.12. If you measure in tolas, as many families in Pakistan and India do, one tola is 11.66 grams.
The Rate and the Formula
The final line of how to calculate zakat is identical for both assets: zakatable total × 0.025. Dividing by 40 gives the same answer and is easier to do in your head.
So $8,000 in savings owes $200, and $8,000 of pure gold content owes $200. The rate never favors one asset over the other.
Timing: The Lunar Year
Zakat falls due once your wealth has stayed above the nisab for a full lunar year, a period called the hawl. A lunar year is about 354 days, so your date creeps roughly 11 days earlier on the Gregorian calendar each year.
Pick the Islamic date on which you first crossed the threshold and keep it. Many people choose a day in Ramadan because it is easy to remember. On that day you assess what you hold, so there is no need to track every deposit and withdrawal in between.
Debts and Deductions
Deductions come off the combined pot. Islamic Relief’s guidance allows you to subtract debts that are due now, but not bills that have not arrived or debts with no payment due in the next 12 months.
In practice, this month’s rent, an overdue credit card balance and a loan installment already due can come off. The full outstanding balance of a long-term home financing plan cannot.
Gold Nisab or Silver Nisab: The Choice Behind the Math
Two people with identical wealth can reach different answers on how to calculate zakat, and the reason is usually this choice. With $5,000 in savings, the silver nisab says you owe $125. The gold nisab says you owe nothing.
Many charities default to silver. Islamic Relief says it uses silver as a general principle, because the lower threshold brings more people into paying and so more reaches those in need. Other scholars prefer gold, arguing it tracks real purchasing power more closely.
If your pot sits anywhere between roughly $1,217 and $11,690, settle this question first. Everything else in the calculation is arithmetic.
The Data: The Silver Threshold Nearly Halved in Eight Months
Fortune’s daily price reports show silver at $119.47 an ounce on 29 January 2026 and $61.80 on 5 October 2026. Applied to 612.36 grams, that moves the silver nisab from about $2,352 to about $1,217, a fall of 48%.
Someone holding $2,000 in savings was below the silver threshold in January and above it in October without saving another cent. This is why any zakat guide that quotes a fixed dollar nisab goes stale within weeks.
Use the metal price on your own zakat date, and never reuse last year’s figure. The same applies to your jewelry, which should be repriced every year even though its weight has not changed.
Interest, Riba and Your Zakat
Most conventional savings accounts pay interest, which Islamic law treats as riba. The widely held position is that this interest was never yours. You give all of it away to charity, separately, and it does not count as zakat.
For a halal-conscious saver, how to calculate zakat on a conventional account therefore takes one extra step. Total the interest credited during the year, remove it from the balance, and apply 2.5% to what is left. Paying zakat on interest does not cleanse it.
Profit from an Islamic savings account is different. It comes from a profit-sharing arrangement, so it stays in your balance and is zakatable with the rest.
Physical gold earns no interest, which keeps this side simple. The riba question for gold arises when you buy it: classical rules require gold and money to change hands on the spot, so many scholars object to installment purchases.
Where Each Asset Is Easier
Neither asset changes how to calculate zakat in principle. They differ in how much work each step takes.
Where Gold and Jewelry Wins
- Nothing to untangle. Gold in a drawer earns no return, so there is no interest to strip out before you start.
- A stable inventory. Weigh each piece once and record the weight and karat. After that, only the price changes from year to year.
- A possible exemption. Under three of the four Sunni schools, jewelry you wear regularly falls outside zakat altogether.
Two things work against it:
- The bill rises with the market. When gold climbs, your zakat climbs too, and you still need cash to pay it.
- Purity can be guesswork. Unstamped or stone-set pieces need a jeweler to estimate the metal weight.
Where Cash Savings Wins
- Valuation takes minutes. The balance on the screen is the value. There is no purity to work out and no price to look up.
- It pays its own bill. The zakat comes out of the same pot you are assessing, so nothing has to be sold.
- No ruling to choose. Every school agrees that cash above the nisab is zakatable.
Two things work against it:
- Interest needs separating. A conventional account means an extra subtraction and a separate donation.
- Money hides. Digital wallets, prepaid cards, foreign accounts and loans to friends are easy to leave off the list.
5 Tools That Show You How to Calculate Zakat
Each of these is free and run by an organization you can check for yourself. Compare which nisab each one applies before you rely on the result.
- Islamic Relief Zakat Calculator. Covers cash, gold, silver and debts, with plain answers on what can be deducted.
- Zakat Foundation of America. A U.S.-based calculator with separate lines for cash, precious metals, stocks and dividends.
- National Zakat Foundation. A UK calculator backed by free guides, including one for missed years, and free consultations.
- Islamic Finance Guru. A calculator plus asset-by-asset guides for gold, pensions, shares and crypto.
- Nisab.today. A live tracker of the gold and silver nisab, useful for checking the threshold on your date.
Which Approach Is Right for You
Mostly jewelry, little cash. Weigh it, note the karats, and confirm your school’s position on worn pieces. If you follow the Hanafi view, a 100-gram 22K bridal set owes about $306 at current prices, so plan where that cash comes from.
Mostly cash. List every account, remove interest, subtract debts due now, and take 2.5%. This is the quickest version of how to calculate zakat and rarely takes more than half an hour.
A mix of both. Run one combined pot, as in the example near the top. Do not test each asset against its own threshold separately.
A total between the two thresholds. Ask a scholar which nisab applies to you before doing anything else.
Years you have missed. Work out each year separately with that year’s balances and prices, and ask one of the organizations above for help.
Key Takeaways: How to Calculate Zakat in 2027
- Gold and cash share one rate, 2.5%, and go into one combined pot before you test the nisab.
- Value gold by pure content: weight × karat ÷ 24 × the price per gram on your zakat date.
- The silver nisab was about $1,217 and the gold nisab about $11,690 in early October 2026. Check both again on your own date.
- Worn jewelry is zakatable in the Hanafi school and exempt in the other three, so confirm which position you follow.
- Interest on a conventional account is given away separately and never counted as zakat.
