Making Money · Side Hustles & Gig Work

Preply, Wyzant and Cambly all pay you to teach online, but they split the money, pick who can join and pay you out in very different ways.

If you’re hunting for the best online tutoring jobs heading into 2027, three names come up again and again: Preply, Wyzant and Cambly. All three are real, long-running platforms that pay real money. But “which pays most” is the wrong first question.

Each one is built for a different kind of tutor. One lets anyone with a skill set their own price, one is limited to U.S. residents, and one pays a fixed per-minute rate for English conversation. There’s no single correct pick here, only the one that fits your subject, your location and how much time you can give it.

Our Wisers Say

Judge a tutoring platform by your effective hourly rate, not the rate on your profile. Take what you actually keep after fees, then divide by every hour you spent: teaching, waiting, trial lessons and admin. A $30 listed rate that books four hours a week loses to a $15 rate that books fifteen.

Good News, You Don’t Have to Choose

None of these platforms ask for exclusivity. You can run a profile on two of them at once, and many tutors do exactly that while they build reviews.

A common setup is pairing a marketplace where you set your own price with a fixed-rate option you can open whenever your calendar has gaps. The fixed-rate side fills dead time, and the marketplace side is where your rate can grow over the months.

Criteria-by-Criteria: How the Best Online Tutoring Jobs Stack Up

Who Sets Your Pay

On Preply and Wyzant, you choose your hourly rate and can change it anytime. That control is what lets experienced tutors climb into higher pay over time.

Cambly works the other way. Its tutor FAQ lists a flat $0.17 per minute on the main platform and $0.20 on Cambly Kids, and you can’t negotiate it. Simpler, but your ceiling is fixed from day one.

How Much the Platform Keeps

Preply charges a sliding commission based on total hours taught across the platform. Its help center says the rate starts at 33%, drops to 28% after 20 hours, and keeps falling to 18% once you pass 400 hours.

Wyzant is flat: tutors keep 75% and Wyzant retains a 25% platform fee. The exception is a student you bring to Wyzant yourself, where you keep 100% of your rate. Students separately pay a 9% service fee on top, which doesn’t come out of your share.

The First-Lesson Catch

This is Preply’s biggest surprise for new tutors. Preply keeps 100% of every trial lesson with a new student, and says the money funds free replacement trials for students, which it argues helps tutors get booked.

In practice, your first weeks there can involve a lot of unpaid trials. That makes Preply the slowest starter of the best online tutoring jobs here, since Wyzant and Cambly pay you from the first minute of the first lesson.

Who’s Allowed to Join

Eligibility rules out a lot of readers before pay even matters. Wyzant requires tutors to be at least 18, live in the United States and hold a valid Social Security number. Outside the U.S., it isn’t an option.

Cambly wants native English speakers aged 18 or older, can’t be used from California, Massachusetts or New Jersey, and says it’s temporarily limiting new tutors to protect current tutors’ schedules. Preply is the most open of the three, reviewing profiles from tutors worldwide.

How and When You Get Paid

Wyzant pays by direct deposit on the 1st and 15th of each month, for lessons submitted at least five business days earlier. Cambly processes pay every Tuesday through PayPal or Stripe, though the options vary by country.

Preply holds your earnings in your account until you withdraw them, and available methods depend on where you live. If you’re outside the U.S. or Europe, check which withdrawal routes work in your country before you invest hours in a profile.

What You Can Teach

Preply leans heavily toward languages but also lists academic subjects. Wyzant is strongest for U.S. school subjects and test prep, where hourly rates can run well above conversation tutoring.

Cambly is English conversation only. There’s little prep, since students often just want to talk, but there’s also no path to charging more for specialist knowledge.

The Number That Matters: Your Effective Hourly Rate

Every platform advertises a per-hour figure, and every one of them is only true for hours that are actually booked. Your real earnings depend on how much of your available time turns into paid lessons.

Cambly’s tutor terms, for example, say it doesn’t guarantee any minimum number of students or revenue. Preply’s trials and the time spent building a review history are unpaid hours, too. If you open 20 hours a week and fill eight, your effective rate is less than half the headline.

That’s why comparing the best online tutoring jobs on headline pay alone is misleading. Track three numbers weekly: hours available, hours paid, and money received after fees. Divide money by hours available, and you’ll know within a month which platform deserves more of your time.

By the Numbers: The 15.3% Most New Tutors Forget

All three platforms treat you as an independent contractor, not an employee. Nobody withholds tax from your payouts, so the tax side is on you.

For U.S. tutors, the IRS sets the self-employment tax rate at 15.3%: 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare. It applies once your net self-employment earnings reach $400 in a year, and it comes on top of regular income tax.

Whichever of the best online tutoring jobs you choose, run this check. Put that against Wyzant’s math. A $40 rate becomes $30 after the 25% fee, and self-employment tax then takes a further slice of your net profit. The IRS does let you deduct the employer-equivalent half when working out your adjusted gross income, which softens it a little.

Tutoring from outside the U.S.? These IRS rules won’t be yours, but the principle carries over: platform income usually arrives untaxed, so set aside a share of every payout for whatever your local tax authority expects.

Are the Best Online Tutoring Jobs Halal?

For a halal-conscious reader, tutoring is one of the cleaner ways to earn. You’re paid a fee for a service you perform, and no riba (interest) is involved in how Preply, Wyzant or Cambly pay tutors. Their commissions are service charges, not interest.

The questions worth asking sit around the edges. Is the subject itself permissible to teach? And where do your earnings sit once they land? Parking them in an interest-bearing savings account brings riba back in, so a halal-aware tutor might choose a non-interest account instead.

If tutoring income builds into savings over a year, remember it counts toward your zakat calculation like any other wealth.

Two More Platforms Worth Knowing

If none of the big three fit, two other established names round out the best online tutoring jobs for many readers.

  • italki. A language marketplace with two tracks: community tutors and professional teachers. You set your own prices, and community tutors can later upgrade to professional status.
  • Outschool. Live classes for learners aged 3 to 18, often in small groups. You set the price, and Outschool takes a 30% service fee on enrollments.

Pros and Cons of Each Platform

No single option wins outright among the best online tutoring jobs. Here’s where each one earns its place, and where it doesn’t.

Where Preply Wins

  • Open to tutors almost anywhere. It’s the only one of the three without a residency or native-speaker rule.
  • Your cut improves as you grow. Commission falls from 33% toward an 18% floor as your total hours rise.
  • You control your price. Rates can rise as reviews and repeat students build up.
  • The catch. Every trial with a new student pays you nothing, and the starting commission is the steepest of the group.

Where Wyzant Wins

  • Predictable fee. A flat 25% means you always know your take-home.
  • Referral reward. Students you bring yourself pay you your full rate.
  • Higher-value subjects. Academic and test-prep demand suits tutors with real expertise.
  • The catch. It’s closed to anyone not living in the U.S. with a Social Security number.

Where Cambly Wins

  • Almost no prep. Lessons are mostly conversation, and credentials aren’t essential.
  • Weekly pay. Earnings are processed every Tuesday.
  • Paid from the first minute. There’s no unpaid trial lesson.
  • The catch. The rate is fixed and low, and new tutor sign-ups are currently limited.

Which One Is Right for You

You live outside the U.S. and teach a language or school subject: start with Preply, and budget for a few weeks of unpaid trials while you build reviews.

You’re a U.S. resident with academic or test-prep expertise: Wyzant’s flat fee and higher-value subjects make it the strongest of the best online tutoring jobs for you, especially if you can refer some students yourself.

You’re a native English speaker who wants low-effort, flexible hours: Cambly fits, as long as you accept the fixed rate and a possible wait to get approved.

You want the strongest long-term income: pair one price-setting marketplace with a fixed-rate fallback, and move hours toward whichever wins on effective hourly rate.

Key Takeaways

  • The best online tutoring jobs depend on where you live: Wyzant is U.S.-only, Cambly wants native English speakers, and Preply is open almost everywhere.
  • Preply’s commission falls from 33% to 18% with hours, but trial lessons with new students pay $0.
  • Wyzant keeps a flat 25%, and nothing on students you refer yourself.
  • Judge every platform on your effective hourly rate, and set aside money for taxes from every payout.
  • Tutoring income itself is riba-free; for halal-conscious tutors, the bigger question is where the earnings are kept.
